Community Assessment Tool — Transportation

Identifying your resources

  • How many older adults in your community drive an automobile as their primary method of transportation?
  • How many older adults use public transportation services?
  • What is the current inventory of transportation services including?
    • Major highway systems
    • Commercial air services
    • Public transportation system (e.g., bus, rail)
    • Alternative transportation system (e.g., fixed-route, demand-response, para-transit, community vans, independent providers)
  • Are the highways designed according to the Standards for Older Drivers:
    • Wide lanes
    • Clearly marked pavement
    • Adequate lighting
    • Large, reflective fonts on signs
    • Protected left turns
  • What are the crash and fatality rates?
  • Are the transportation services affordable to older adults?
  • Are older adults able to access available transportation services?
    • How far in advance does the trip need to be scheduled?
    • What flexibility do riders have in combining trips or traveling to multiple locations?
    • Are older adults able to access transportation services for social trips?
    • Are the services accessible to all ability and functional levels?
    • How far does an individual have to walk to get to public transportation stops?
    • How many transportation providers offer curb-to-curb service? Door-to door service?
  • Will the current transportation services have the capacity to meet the mobility needs and preferences of the projected number of older adults in five, 10 or 20 years?

Building your community

  • What are the current policy barriers to delivering transportation services?
  • What are the primary strengths of transportation services?
  • What are the primary gaps in transportation services?
  • What are the opportunities for coordination among transportation service providers?
    • Are older adults aware of the transportation services available to them?
    • How do older adults learn about transportation options available to them?
    • What are your current methods of outreach to educate older consumers about transportation options?
    • How can you improve outreach/awareness of transportation options?
  • Do transportation services meet the mobility needs and preferences of older adults?
  • How can you assess the transportation and mobility needs of older adults?
