Education
Elderhostels
Elderhostels are programs that, in conjunction with universities and other organizations nationwide, provide hundreds of educational programs each year for people 55 and older. Elderhostels combine travel and adventure packages with liberal arts study programs in friendly, supportive academic environments. Programs may include, for example, painting, dog sledding, botany, and landscapes.
Elderhostel fees vary depending on the program, and can range from the low hundreds to a thousand dollars plus. Elderhostels, however, do set aside a limited number of scholarships to be used within the United States. Although scholarships are available for low-income elders, most Elderhostel participants have moderate to high incomes and are educated –46 percent had a four-year degree or more.
