Housing
Accessible design
According to a study by HUD, building adaptive design into housing units adds less than one percent to the total cost of the project. Although federal laws require accessibility features in multifamily housing (e.g., apartments), similar requirements in single-family housing are left to the discretion of state and local jurisdictions. A limited number of jurisdictions, including Texas , have adopted accessible housing policy for single-family housing. Senate Bill 623, which took effect September 1, 1999, requires certain accessibility features in newly constructed single-family affordable housing subsidized with state or federal funds administered by TDHCA. Some cities, such as Austin, have additional ordinances governing accessibility features in single-family housing.
