Joint ownership

Because property in joint ownership does not pass through probate, some people use joint ownership to distribute their estates. Joint ownership gives another person equal control over whatever property is placed under that arrangement. However, a person's control over jointly-held property is limited. Adding names to a title or deed may also negatively affect eligibility for tax credits and government benefits.
