Social Engagement

Background

Social engagement is supported by Congress' declaration of objectives in the Older Americans Act (OAA), which states that older adults have the right to "participate in and contribute to meaningful activity with the widest range of civic, cultural, education and training, and recreational opportunities."

Social engagement is a critical factor in successful aging. It includes socialization and interaction with peers and other community members in ways that include but are not limited to pursuit of employment, volunteering, life-long learning, or other activities that keep older adults involved in their communities.

Moreover, the Vision Statement for an Aging Texas states that older people in Texas should have opportunities for education and meaningful and productive involvement in family and community activities.
