Isolation

Some older adults may become socially isolated due to factors beyond their control. These factors may include: loss of a spouse, family, or friend; reduced mobility; disability, sensory loss; illness; institutionalization, or fixed income. Older adults living in rural areas are at greater risk for social isolation due to geographic isolation. Other groups of adults at risk for isolation include those who are deaf or hard of hearing, whose primary language is not English, and who have limited mobility.
