Social Engagement

Information technology

For those whose social networks are limited by loss of mobility or other factors, on-line supportive relationships may be an adequate substitute for, or an important addition to, face-to-face supportive relationships. Internet use has continued to increase among seniors, with an estimated 70 percent of seniors having accessed the Internet. However, low-income seniors with low education levels are less likely to use computers. Demographic information indicates that most computer and Internet users are "well-educated" (20 percent reporting education past the Master's level) and have moderate to high incomes.
